- EXCESS WEIGHT
The two characteristics of being overweight are excess fat stores and excessive body weight compared to body height. Though there must be a combination of these two characteristics. For example, it is possible to have excess body weight without having large stores of fat.
Being overweight is also described in other terms, such as adiposity or obesity. Being overweight can also be caused by a large quantity of muscle tissue; muscle tissue weighs more than fat tissue. This may be the case with bodybuilders and many other top athletes who build up a large muscle mass in order to perform effectively.
Fluid retention can also cause one to be overweight. The amount of fluid in one’s body can vary. Due to some illnesses, as well as particular medicines, the body may retain large quantities of water. On a smaller scale, we see this in women during menstruation: Fluid may be retained immediately prior to the menstruation period, which is discharged again during menstruation.
In addition to fats, there are also fat-like substances. These substances are similar to fats and can also be found in foodstuffs. An example of this is cholesterol.
Cholesterol has built up a very negative image because it leads to the onset of cardiovascular diseases.
However, cholesterol can also be useful. Just like fats, cholesterol acts like building and insulation material, fulfils a role in fat digestion and is a component in certain vitamins and minerals.
Part of our cholesterol quantity is taken in via foods, but the majority of it is produced inside the body, namely, in the liver. Cholesterol is thus essential for our bodies and is a normal component.
